Meet Joanne Benson

Hi, I’m Joanne, the proud owner of A Proper Sort. I was born and raised in Birmingham, England, moved to the United States in 2007, and became a US citizen in 2020. Now, as a wife and mother in a creative, neurodiverse household, I understand how important it is for our spaces and systems to support real life — not add to the overwhelm.

Being organized became second nature to me early on. From birth to the age of 16 years, my family moved house nine times, which meant I had plenty of practice adjusting to new spaces, setting up bedrooms, and learning how to make a house feel like home again. My early career continued that pattern of change, taking me from England to the Netherlands, to France, back to the Netherlands, and eventually back to England before I made the move to the USA. Living and working in other countries also gave me a deep appreciation for different cultures, family traditions, lifestyles, and the many ways people create a sense of home.

Those experiences, along with my background in logistics management, shaped the way I approach organizing today. I have always been drawn to finding calmer, smarter, and more practical ways to make life run smoothly. Through A Proper Sort, I help clients create peaceful spaces, manageable systems, and a little more breathing room — with respect for who they are, how they live, and what matters most to them.
