Frequently Asked Questions
If your question is not answered here, please reach out — we are happy to talk it through.
Do I need to clean or tidy before you arrive?
No. Please do not feel the need to tidy up before your session. Seeing the space as it currently functions helps us understand what is working, what is not, and how to create a system that fits your real life.
What types of spaces can you help with?
We can help with closets, kitchens, pantries, bedrooms, playrooms, laundry rooms, garages, storage areas, small offices, and more. Whether the space needs decluttering, sorting, resetting, or simply a fresh pair of helping hands, we work with you to make it feel more manageable.
Do you make me throw things away?
No. You remain in control of your belongings and your decisions. We can help you sort, categorize, discuss options, and make decisions, but we do not force you to get rid of anything.
Do I need to buy organizing products before our session?
Not usually. It is often better to sort and declutter first, then decide what products are truly needed. We will always utilize what you may have on hand before recommending new products.
What happens during the complimentary consultation?
We discuss your goals, concerns, priorities, timeline, and the areas where you need help. This is also an opportunity to decide which session or package may be the best fit.
Is there always a need for an in-home consultation?
Not always. For projects under 24 hours, an in-home consultation is usually not required. In many cases, client-provided photos or a walk-through video will give us enough information to understand the space and recommend the best package.
For projects of 24 hours or more, a more detailed in-home assessment is required so we can better understand the scope of work, the time needed, and how to support you safely and effectively. There is a $150 assessment fee, which will be applied toward your package total if you book within 14 calendar days of the visit. If no booking is made, the assessment fee is non-refundable.
What happens during an in-home consultation, and how long does it last?
An in-home consultation of up to 90 minutes is required for all packages of 24 hours or more. It is also available for smaller projects when requested or when the scope cannot be assessed adequately through photographs or video.
The consultation may include:
- A walkthrough of the project areas
- A more detailed discussion of your goals and priorities
- Identification of potential challenges or obstacles
- Preliminary measurements
- Discussion of organizing products or storage solutions
- Review of the recommended package
- Discussion of the client agreement, policies, and payment arrangements
- Answers to questions about the proposed project
What if I need to reschedule a session?
Appointments may be rescheduled with at least 48 hours’ notice. Rescheduling requests made with less than 48 hours’ notice may result in the deposit being forfeited.
Do I need to be home during the session?
For most decision-making sessions, yes, because you will need to make choices about your belongings. For some organizing or reset projects, we may be able to work more independently once your goals are clear.
Do multi-day packages have to be booked back-to-back?
No. In fact, if your decision-making is required during the process, we often discourage booking sessions back-to-back. Sorting through belongings can be emotionally tiring, and taking breaks between sessions can give you time to rest, reflect, and make decisions at a more comfortable pace. Scheduling options can be discussed in greater detail during your consultation.
What happens if I do not use all my package hours?
Package hours are reserved specifically for your project. If your project is completed with time remaining, we will discuss the best use of any unused hours, which may include applying them toward another decluttering session within a set time period of time. If you choose not to use the full package, the package discount may no longer apply, and the completed hours may be recalculated at the appropriate hourly rate. Full details will be provided in the client agreement before booking.
Are sessions confidential?
Yes. Your home, belongings, and personal circumstances are treated with care, respect, and confidentiality. A Proper Sort understands that inviting someone into your space can feel personal, and your privacy will always be respected. Photos will never be shared for marketing, social media, or website use without your written permission and approval.
Will you take donations away, and can I choose the charity?
Yes, when possible, A Proper Sort can take your donation bags and items that are under 40 lbs each and fit safely into a midsize SUV. Donation removal is limited to one vehicle load per visit. We are unable to remove trash, hazardous materials, or items requiring special handling.
If we are unable to take donations with us, we can help arrange pickup through a local charity when available. If you prefer to donate to a specific charity or multiple charities, collection or delivery will need to be arranged by you. A list of suggested charities can be found on our Resources page.
What types of payment do you accept?
A Proper Sort accepts several convenient payment methods, including cash, check, Zelle, Paypal, Venmo, and major credit/debit cards when available.
Please note: Credit card payments are subject to a 3% processing fee.
